The word Christian is used 3 times in the New Testament. The word disciple – which can also be translated apprentice – is used 269 times. It seems that biblically, people who identify with Jesus are more like apprentices than a demographic descriptor.

Discipleship has come to mean working through a workbook with someone older than you or taking a seminary course. The word apprentice seems to have much more traction when you consider the daily, normal life lived with someone you want to be like. That is what Jesus did – he called 12 guys to apprentice with him. They lived together, did stuff together, they were instructed and sent out, they were taught different things and could ask lots of questions, the helped him do different things.

What would change in your life if you were to make apprenticeship to Jesus the One Thing that defines all the other things?
