Key Definitions and Concepts:

  • Sanctification
    • The progressive work of God AND man that makes us more free from sin and more like Christ in our actual lives. (Grudem)
    • is not defined by external obedience, but by the kind of person one has become. (Willard)
  • Without God we can’t, without us, He won’t

 

  • Spiritual Formation: the process by which the human spirit or will is given a definite form or character.

 

 

  • Christian Spiritual Formation: The Spirit-driven process of forming the inner world of the human self in such a way that it becomes like the inner being of Christ himself. 

 

  • Disciplines/Practices: Are activities within our power that enable us to accomplish what we cannot do by direct effort. There is no complete list of disciplines for the Spiritual Life but there are some main ones to learn. 

 

  • Key Spiritual Disciplines: Silence and Solitude, Prayer, Scripture Meditation, Service, Community, Simple Living, Sabbath, Confession, Fasting, Celebration, Study 

 

  • Heart-Body Loop: What our heart longs for affects what we do with our bodies and what we do with our bodies affects what our hearts longs for.

 

  • Don’t TRY to be like Jesus, TRAIN to be like Jesus.

 

  • Grace is opposed to EARNING, not EFFORT. 

 

  • You cannot have the LIFE of Jesus without the LIFESTYLE of Jesus
